Basic Rules

In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.

At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.

The game has two phases. Usually the first is Night. During Night, the Town can not communicate, but the Mafia can discuss and choose someone to murder. After the Moderator has received the name of the victim, the Moderator reveals the dead player, and Day begins.

During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it is once again Night.

The game alternates between Night and Day until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else.

Basic Roles

The above suffices for a Vanilla game, but most games of Mafia have roles other than just Mafia and Townie. These roles have additional abilities (which are usually used during the Night, though there are some Day abilities as well). The most common are listed here.

Cop - Each night, the Cop can investigate one player (by sending their name to the Moderator), and finds out whether that player is Mafia or not. The Cop is on the Town's side.

Doctor - Each night, the Doctor can choose one player to protect (by sending their name to the Moderator). If the Mafia (or anyone else) tries to kill that player, they will fail. The Doctor is on the Town's side.

Vigilante - Each night, the Vigilante may kill another player (by sending their name to the Moderator). The Vigilante is on the Town's side.

Serial Killer - The Serial Killer (often abbreviated as SK), like the Vigilante, may kill another player each Night (by sending their name to the Moderator). However, the Serial Killer is not on the Town's side or the Mafia's side. The Serial Killer wins when everyone else is dead.

Multiple Families - Often there is more than one group of Mafia. These act independently of one another, and must kill the other group as well as the Town in order to win.

There are many variations on the above roles that will often appear in more complicated games.

Rules

The Basics
[ 0 ] The mod supposed to be always right. If you see something that disagrees with that, then PM me. I'm only human.
[1] DO NOT quote your role PMs directly – you must paraphrase the wording. If you are unsure as to what is acceptable, ask me via PM.
[2] PM messages to and from the mod are private. Quoting is a modkillable offense.
[3] Your votes and unvotes must be in bold (Vote: Testiclies)
[4] You must unvote before you can change your vote. (unvote, vote: Testiclies)
[5] You may not discuss the game outside this thread unless your role permits you to. If someone approaches you to discuss the game without me telling you they can do so please report it to me.

Lynching, Twilight and Deaths
[6] Once you are dead you may not post, except for a single post consisting of “bah, go town/scum” or something similar. No death FoSes OR "Remember who I said was scum" are allowed. You're dead. Stop talking.
[7] Once a lynching vote has been cast, you're in Twilight. Posting is prohibited, even if the thread's not locked yet. I'll permit an honest mistake.
[8] A modkill takes the place of the day's lynch.

Deadlines and Inactivity
[9] A deadline may be imposed by the mod if things are slowing down. What happens at deadline will be specified, if and when a deadline is set.
[10] You've made a commitment to the game, so please follow it through, and post.
[11] If you want a player prodded, please request so in thread. I will also prod any players if and when I feel it is appropriate.
[12] Failure to pick up your prod in a certain amount of time (48 hours on average, longer at weekends), will result in replacement.

Behavior
[13] Leave any grudges at the door. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.
[14] I have no problem with codes, but invisible type or small letters are not allowed. Period.

Nights
[15] Once all night choices are in, the next day will dawn. So do not send in your nightchoice, until you're happy for the next day to begin.

Miscellaneous
[16] When addressing the mod, try bolding your comment, so it will definitely be noticed.

FWIW, the roles as listed above may or may not be in play in this game.  For example, the multiple family rule will most likely not be used and the number of protector roles will depend the total number of  players.  Some of the other rules listed might changed too.

Role Description
The Godfather. The Kingpin. The woman who controls the Mafia and decides who lives and who dies. She knows each member of her family and the secret identity of the thief. She bribes the town officials for information to help his family decide who gets to sleep with the fishes every night fall. Truly a woman to be feared.

Primary Duties
Every Night Cycle send in an inquiry(PM) to the game moderator with a request for a hit. The family discovers the results of the hit the following morning.

Every Night Cycle send in a bribe(PM) to the game moderator with the name of the person you would like information on, the higher your bribe, the more accurate the information you receive is. A 200 Point bribe guaranties 100% accuracy on the role of the individual you name, 100 Points gives you a 50/50 shot at accuracy, etc..
Your bribes come out of a special account that's funded by the activities of the thief. The account does not begin gathering Points until game start.

RULE Clarifications

The Mafia may not contact the Thief by PM, chat room, board posting, phone call, telegram, radio, or carrier pigeon for the purposes of identifying themselves. If you want to let the Thief know who you are you will have to do it by subtle hinting in the game threads and no where else!

Under no circumstance can the contents of PM's between yourself and the game moderator be revealed to anyone. Doing so is instant, horrible, game death.

This does not mean that you can't speak your role in the public threads. You can if you feel it will increase your teams advantage, you simply may not use any of the details provided by the moderator to prove the authenticity of your claim.

If you wish to accept this role please notify me by PM or e-mail within the next 24 hours. If you wish to decline it would be appreciated if you notified me as soon as possible so that an alternate player can be selected!

Since the town has such a heavy advantage in this game, you get to Kill first - the game begins with sunset. I need a fast kill and the Godfather's first inquiry - you have 50 points to work with arizona.

Also, one of the most common ploys on the part of the real town members is to pick a part of their role PM and use it in their posts, something like,

"All real simple town members will know my role"

Where the word simple was used in their role PM. Yes, this is blatant violation of the game rules, but terribly hard to enforce against them. So, I provide the other teams with the town role PM:

Role Description
Part of the community that is besieged by crime and murder, you simply want the nightmare to end and you are willing to do anything to that end, including lynching other suspect town members!

Primary Duties
Every "day" cycle read the comments of your other town members, make your own, cast accusations (accusing puts the person names on the "Lynch" poll), and when you are ready, vote for the person who you think deserves the necktie party!

Hey Bob,

Whats our minimum number of players? We have 7 right now, if I remember right we need at least another 3-5. Or play as is with 4 to lynch...
I have also set up a Bank/Shop for the use of currency in the game if needed, if this one doesn't another might.

I was half being pissy and half in jest.  This will give everyont the basics.  I'll pin it down a little more when we start.  I don't see the need for a bank, but' I'll think on it some and try to come up with a use.

BTW, Mafia Members are in the new Mafia Members Group, they show up as a Brown color in the Who's online area, they are also the only one's besides the Admins & Mods that can see the Mafia Game Board.

Is it possible to make it visible but non-postable?  It might attract players for future games if they watch it in progress.
